Stephen Halas is an associate lawyer with Tradition Law LLP Estates and Trusts. Stephen practices in the areas of estate litigation, estate planning, trusts, power of attorney issues, and corporate structuring.
Stephen obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa in 2021 in addition to his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Manitoba earned in 2016. He was called to both the Manitoba and Ontario Bar in 2022.
Stephen graduated from the common law program at the University of Ottawa. There, he participated in advocacy-focused activities including moot competitions, negotiation programs, and by serving as the Vice-President Equity of the University of Ottawa Common Law Student Society. He also contributed as a research assistant for reports to the Federal Department of Justice and the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Outside of his client-focused work, Stephen regularly authors case law reviews for the Manitoba Bar Association’s Headnotes and Footnotes and is currently co-authoring a publication on powers of attorney issues. He also assisted with the recent revisions to the Law Society of Manitoba’s “CPLED” materials on estate administration.
Stephen stays current on estate and trust issues impacting other jurisdictions by regularly consulting with estate practitioners across the country. Stephen is also a member of the Estate Planning Council of Winnipeg.
Stephen maintains a strong connection to his community. He has volunteered with various programs including Synonym’s Wall to Wall Mural Festival and the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC). Stephen returned to Winnipeg after living in both South Korea and Ottawa and looks forward to once again participating in these community activities.
Apart from work, Stephen enjoys playing and writing music, playing soccer, baseball, and volleyball, cooking, and spending quality time with friends and family.
