John Delaney received his call to the Manitoba Bar in 1987 and his call to the Alberta Bar in 2008. His main areas of focus are estate planning and estate administration. Generally, he helps people plan for death and incapacity. Specifically, he assists people in achieving diversified personal goals including, providing for and protecting disabled and vulnerable beneficiaries, reducing the tax burden on income generating inheritances, preserving family assets, establishing and maintaining testamentary trusts, reorganising corporate entities in contemplation of retirement and death, and assisting personal representatives with the arrangement of the expeditious orderly transfer of estate assets to beneficiaries.
He is a past chair of the Manitoba Bar Association Will and Estates Section. He is the past President of the Estate Planning Council of Winnipeg. He is one of the initiators of Wills Week, a Manitoba provincial initiative directed to educating the public on the importance of having a will, power of attorney and living will. He is the co-editor of the “Wills and Estates Decisions” feature in Headnotes and Footnotes, providing monthly wills and estates case summaries and updates to lawyers in the Province of Manitoba. He is a past contributor to the “Guide to Estate and Trust Accounting” published by Carswell Canada and a member of the national editorial panel for a textbook for lawyers and accountants titled “Taxation of Trusts and Estates” published by Carswell Canada.
He is a partner with the Winnipeg law firm Tradition Law LLP, Estates and Trusts. He has given numerous presentations and seminars to lawyers, accountants, financial planners and trust companies on a wide range of estate planning and estate administration topics including Planning for Disabled Beneficiaries, Intestacy, RRSP Creditor Proofing, Joint Ownership, Multiple Wills, Testamentary Trusts, Insurance Trusts, Basic and Advanced Probate Avoidance Techniques, Basic Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives and other estate planning and estate administration subjects.
